Energy secretary-designate confirmation hearing audio available

Chu is Nobel Prize winner, Berkeley lab director

Steven Chu, nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to be the new Department of Energy secretary, appeared before a Senate committee Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee conducted the confirmation hearing on Chu, currently the director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

A Nobel Laureate physicist-he shared the Nobel Prize in physics in 1997 for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light-Chu also is a professor of physics and molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley.
