The second annual Conference on Health Communication, Marketing and Media will kick-off by offering three pre-conference workshops on

Tuesday, August 12 from 8:00 – 11:30.

The workshop topics are:

  • Crisis and Emergency Risk Communications
  • Designing Health Literate Marketing Products and Services
  • Social Media for Marketers

The registration fee for each workshop is $75.

Workshop attendance space is limited - please register early. All requests will be honored on a first come-first serve basis.

Pre-Conference Workshop I – Crisis and Emergency Risk Communications

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the nuts and bolts of crisis and emergency risk communication (planning and tools)
  • Understand the psychology of a public health emergency
  • Apply the six foundational principles of crisis and emergency risk communication, identifying opportunities and drawbacks among the various types of media interviews and environment
  • Analyze the major contributors to success when communicating during a public health emergency
  • Understand the basic principles of risk communication message development

This workshop is designed for all public health officials who need to understand and apply the basic principles of risk communication during a public health crisis or emergency. Crisis & Emergency Risk Communication (CERC) gives leaders the tools to navigate the harsh realities of speaking to the public, media, partners and stakeholders during an intense public-safety emergency, including terrorism. In a crisis, the right message at the right time is a "resource multiplier" — it helps response officials get their job done. Many predictable harmful individual and community behaviors can be mitigated with effective crisis and emergency risk communication.

Pre-Conference Workshop II – Designing Health Literate Marketing Products and Services

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify health literacy problems that should be addressed through a "universal precautions" approach
  • Use three specific skills to assess and develop health literate products and services
  • List three ways to disseminate health literate products and services

This workshop is designed for public health practitioners — including health communicators and social marketers — and decision-makers for social marketing programs. This highly interactive workshop will provide participants with a short overview of health literacy and its importance in designing and developing effective social marketing products and services. Participants will be introduced to three specific skills: assessing the health literacy qualities of settings, products and services; using clear communication and design in creating products and services; and co-creation as a means to improving the health literacy of social marketing programs. This final skill will focus on creating new products and services rather than communication materials. Participants will be asked to use these skills first to improve the health literacy of several existing materials, secondly to design a new social marketing product or service, and finally to disseminate that product or service using health literacy principles.

Pre-Conference Workshop II – Social Media for Social Marketers

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the various types of social media
  • Monitor online audience response to issues/programs
  • Utilize social media to influence healthy behavior change

This workshop is designed for those wishing to expand their knowledge and utilization of social media in their programs. Knowing how to incorporate social media in your strategy is essential if your program is trying to reach youth — or for that matter, anyone with a computer. This workshop will put social media into a marketing context, introduce you to the various types of social media and help you understand how to use these powerful tools to bring about healthy behavior change. You will also learn how to monitor what your audience is saying about your issue or program online, and how best to use social media to respond and generate your own positive online word of mouth. You will also become familiar with blogs, RSS feeds, social networking sites, wikis, consumer-generated media, tagging and more.
