Q:

How can I find the publications I would like to order?

A:  There are two ways to identify publications on topics of interest to you.
  1. View a list of publications by choosing one of the categories on the Welcome page: types of cancer, treatment options, clinical trials, genetics, coping with cancer, testing for cancer, and risk factors/causes and prevention.
  2. Choose Search for publications on the Welcome page. You will go to the Search for Publications page. If you have a particular topic or topics in mind, type one or more keywords in the Search by Keyword(s) box. Or, you may narrow your search by entering a selection in one or more of the categories: type of cancer, subject, audience, language. Simply click on the arrow at the right edge of the box beside the search category. When the list of options pops up, use your mouse to highlight and click on the topic that interests you. You can select only one option within each category (for example, select "breast" or "prostate" as the type of cancer, but not both). By employing two or more search categories (for example, “breast” as the type of cancer and “treatment options” as the subject), you may narrow your search results.

Q:  How can I locate a description of publications in my search results?
A:  After you conduct a search, the ordering system will show you the titles of publications retrieved on Search Results page. Click on the title or on Description to read a brief description of the publication. Some publications can be viewed online via a link to another part of the NCI web site. Click on View to review the full publication. Use your browser's "back" button to return to your Search Results.

A:  Providing an e-mail address allows us to send notification to you when your order has shipped. The Cancer Information Service is a confidential program. Q:  Why am I supposed to enter my ZIP Code first when I provide my shipping information?
A:

To ensure accurate addressing and the fastest possible delivery of packages, this Web site verifies city, state, and ZIP Code combinations against a database provided by the US Postal Service (USPS). When you enter your ZIP Code, the city name and state will automatically fill in based on the USPS database. If more than one city name is associated with the ZIP Code, the city name defined as the “default” by the USPS will appear in the city name field. Other valid city names can be selected from the list that appears below the defaulted city name. This Web site will not accept city, state, and ZIP Code combinations that are not considered valid by the USPS.

  • POS responds with the shipping cost of the order.

Q:

How do I enter a bulk order?

A:  The National Cancer Institute Publications Catalog and Order Form is available as a printed catalog online at http://www.cancer.gov/publications. The online version is updated daily to reflect current availability and order limits for publications. The printed catalog is updated several times a year. Both versions contain instructions for placing orders and a worksheet for calculating the shipping and handling cost of the order. Use either version of the National Cancer Institute Publications Catalog and Order Form to ensure you have up-to-date inventory information and instructions for placing a bulk order (over 20 items). See Payment (over- and underpayment) for information about how over- and underpayments for bulk orders are handled.

Q:

What Options Are Available for Self Printing of Publications?

A:  There are several ways that you can print your own copies of NCI publications.

Self-Printing of NCI Materials
Many NCI materials are available in PDF format that allows printing for personal or organizational use. After selecting the "View" button for the material of interest, look on the left-hand side for the Page Options text box and select the PDF print option. If the material is unavailable in PDF format, you may still print the material using the "Print this page" or "Print this document" selections.

"Riding On" to a Government Order
Organizations may purchase bulk copies of NCI materials by adding on to the Government's print order. Adding on to a Government print order is called a "Ride-On." Ride-On opportunities are available only when the Government is in the process of printing a particular publication. A Ride-On lets organizations purchase extra publications more economically because of lower Government printing costs. For more information about Ride-On printing, see the Ride-On printing fact sheet at http://ncipoet.cancer.gov/RideOnPrinting/RideOnPrintingFactSheet.pdf on the Internet or contact the NCI’s Office of Communications and Education by e-mail at ncipoetinfo@mail.nih.gov. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view and print PDF files. To install Adobe Acrobat Reader, click here for a free download.

Q:

What happens if I overpay or underpay for a bulk order?

A:  Overpayment
If, due to current inventory levels, we are unable to send all of the publications ordered, we will exercise the following options:
  • If the overpayment is $10.00 or less, we will send additional publications to make up the difference.
  • If the overpayment exceeds $10.00, we will refund the unused portion of your payment.
Underpayment
If the payment does not cover the quantity of publications ordered, we will reduce the quantity of publications to match the payment.
