Farmers are at increased risk for inhalation injury from ammonia, fumigants, and insecticides. Confined space accidents are relatively common on farms with potentially fatal exposures to carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and manure gases including hydrogen sulfide and methane. Because farmers work outdoors, rear animals, and raise dust, they have a higher risk for many skin, respiratory, and infectious diseases including, occupational asthma, histoplasmosis, brucellosis, and farmer's lung.
