Other Tribology Equipment

The following specialized support equipment is also available to our guest researchers for performing friction, lubrication and wear tests at the Machining and Inspection Research User Center:

Sather High-
Temperature Oscillatory Scuffing Tester Capacity Screening Rig
This simple bench-top testing machine was designed as a means for conducting comparisons of lubricant load-carrying capacity on commercial lubricants. It is a rapid test, but is not instrumented to record the results of the tests.
Teledyne-Taber Portable Scratch Tester This simple, manual unit has proven handy for conducting initial characterizations of the scratch resistance and adhesion of thin films and coatings. It uses a balance beam with loads from a few tens of grams up to about 0.5 kg. Scratches are inspected and measured manually.
Wilson Microindentation Hardness Tester This is a standard microindentation tester with both Knoop and Vickers indenters. Viewing is with a video system, which helps interpret data and facilitates instruction on the machine. A video measurement cursor system is included as well.
Talysurf Model 10 Stylus Surface Roughness Measuring System This traditional diamond stylus-type instrument is used for measuring a wide variety of surface roughness parameters and for quantifying wear damage as well.
Durometer for Measuring Elastomer Hardness This bench-top device is widely used to measure the hardness of elastomeric materials including tire materials.
