Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Award

The Secretary of Veterans Affairs' Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Award is an annual award sponsored by the Secretary. This Award recognizes organizations within the Department that have implemented management approaches that result in sustained high levels of performance and service to the veterans we serve.

The award is named in memory of Robert W. Carey, a publicly recognized VA quality leader and a champion for excellence in the federal government. He was the Director of the Philadelphia Regional Office and Insurance Center from 1985 until 1990.

The award criteria are aligned with the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. These criteria are nationally recognized as a framework and standard for organizational excellence.

  1. Carey Application Books, Timeline, and Criteria
    The application book contains descriptions of the Carey program process, timeline, and reporting requirements. Circle of Excellence (COE) application book contains process description and timeline. Evaluation criteria are current Baldrige Business or Health Care Criteria.
  2. Training and Board of Examiners Courses for application writing, examination, and registration forms for selection to the Board of Examiners.
  3. Developing Applications, Site Visits, and Carey Judges  Desk guides and an application shell provide potential applicants with information on preparing a Carey application.  The Site Visit Desk Guide outlines the process for conducting site visits, and a Judges Desk Guide describes the duties and responsibilities of Carey Program Judges.
  4. Previous Years Carey Award Winners
    This area provides copies of the trophy and Circle of Excellence winning applications.

    This area contains a registration form and draft agenda for the Secretary's Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Symposium and Awards Ceremony
