Senate Committee on Appropriations Holds Hearing on the “Federal Response to Mad Cow Disease"

On February 24, 2004, the Senate Appropriations Committee (Senator Ted Stevens [R-AK], Chairman) held a hearing on “The Federal Response to Mad Cow Disease.” Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Director, NIAID, NIH, testified on “The NIH Research Agenda for Transmissible Spongiform Enchephalopathies;” Dr. Julie Gerberding, Director of the CDC, testified on the “CDC’s Role in Monitoring for Transmissible Spongiform Enchephalopathies;” Dr. Lester Crawford, Acting Commissioner, FDA, testified on agency efforts to prevent the establishment and spread of TSEs; and Elisa Murano, USDA, highlighted agency efforts in the wake of the positive identification of a case of Mad Cow Disease in a cow in Washington state.
