The ERDC has the Army Environmental Quality Technology (EQT) Program lead for the development of innovative technologies for the detection and discrimination of UXO from false targets in diverse complex UXO and clutter environments. Research conducted by the ERDC ranges from fundamental studies and phenomenological modeling to applied research, development, demonstration and validation of advanced sensor systems, platforms and processing algorithms. Results provide enhanced UXO detection, discrimination, and identification technologies. The ERDC is also developing new comprehensive data acquisition and discrimination algorithms using detailed, physics-based signature modeling and parametric inversion for target properties. The ERDC-developed Management Aid for UXO Detection Efforts (MAUDE) software package assesses key geophysical and environmental site parameters and assists the site remediation manager with sensor/method/system site-specific selection guidelines. Newly developed UXO detection/discrimination technologies are undergoing demonstration/validation field evaluations and will be transitioned to DoD and private sector users. The ERDC EQT UXO RDT&E Program is fully coordinated with the joint service JUXOCO and with DoD sponsored SERDP and ESTCP research programs. Work is ongoing with the EPA and the ITRC to gain regulatory acceptance of new innovative UXO detection/discrimination technologies. |
