WASHINGTON – United States Representative Marion Berry (D-AR, 1st) and U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Mark Pryor (D-AR) today announced a $4 million grant awarded jointly to Arkansas and Tennessee to upgrade the Hernando Desoto Bridge (I-40).
The bridge connects Arkansas and Tennessee over the Mississippi River and the funding will be split between the two states at 40 percent and 60 percent respectively. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department will administer Arkansas’ 40 percent.
This project provides for seismic retrofit work on a complex of twelve bridges, including access ramps. The I-40/Mississippi River bridge complex is located in the New Madrid fault region that was designated by Congress in the Transportation Equity Act, known as TEA-21, to receive high priority for seismic retrofit funding.
