Information Gathering

Two panels, one on Socioeconomic Characterization and one on Ecological Characterization, will be convened to provide the working group with information on the current status of natural resources and human uses of the Tortugas area.

A panel of scientists and knowledgeable citizens were recently convened on June 22, 1998 to discuss their activities to the working group. A rapporteur was responsible for recording the proceedings, obtaining relevant papers and information, and drafting a description of the affected environment following the panel. The panel was composed of scientists and individuals who are knowledgeable about human activities in the area.


One of the purposes of the panel is to allow the working group to identify gaps in our existing knowledge of the human activities. The working group will attempt to address these gaps through available means.

Ecological Characterization Forum

A panel of scientists and knowledgeable citizens who are currently working in the area or who have worked in the area were recently convened on April 16 and 17, 1998 to present their findings and observations to the working group. The panel will be composed of people who are currently working in the area or who have worked in the area recently. The panels include:

Physical Characterization: Tom Lee, Univ. of Miami- current regime; Ron Jones, Florida International Univ.- water quality;Gene Shinn, US Geological Survey- geology Joan Browder; NMFS- seabird ecology

Local Knowledge: Karen DeMaria, biologist; Peter Gladding, Hand line fisherman; Don DeMaria, Commercial spearfisherman; Wayne Hoffman, seabird biologist

Fish: Jim Bohnsack, NMFS; Laddie Akins, Reef Environmental Education Foundation; Anne Marie Eklund, NMFS: Jewfish

Seagrass: Jim Forqurean, Florida International University

Lobster: Rod Bertelsen, Florida Marine Research Institute; Gary Davis, National Park Service

Turtles and other megafauna: Skip Snow, National Park Service
