About

The National Cancer Institute’s Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM) has long recognized that building and sustaining strong interdisciplinary partnerships is a critical factor in the success of some cancer complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) research endeavors. In light of this awareness, we would like to further examine the dynamics of the collaboration between cancer researchers and CAM practitioners during the conference Cancer Researcher & CAM Practitioners:  Fostering Collaborations; Advancing the Science.

The conference will be held on the NIH campus on October 22-23, 2007 and will allow us to bring together members of both these communities who are interested in exploring how to more effectively build research partnerships with one another. This conference will focus on the various facets of successful and unsuccessful collaborations and is being developed to attempt to describe “best practices”.

Goals:
Primary

  • Provide an opportunity for NCI staff to learn about the important issues in the development, support and implementation of research projects involving collaborations between CAM practitioners and cancer researchers
  • Foster interaction and dialog between CAM practitioners and cancer researchers about directions and priorities in cancer research
  • Provide the cancer research and CAM practitioner communities an opportunity to identify and discuss the major issues involved in producing successful research partnerships
    • Identify and document examples of effective research partnerships that can be used to gain a better understanding of issues important in optimizing such collaborative research
  • Begin to define best practices in collaborative research designed to develop appropriate prospective research to study CAM practices
Secondary
  • Provide greater exchange of information between cancer researchers and CAM practitioners possibly leading to the formation of specific practitioner-researcher collaborative projects
  • Provide an opportunity for NCI, NCCAM, and CSR staff involved in program development and grant review to be exposed to some of the highest level research of this type
  • Provide the attending researchers and practitioners with information relevant to the review of such grants

Audience:
Primary

  • NCI Staff
  • Cancer researchers interested in collaborating with CAM practitioners on prospective research
  • CAM practitioners interested in collaborating with cancer researchers on prospective research
Guest Attendees
  • Other NIH program and review staff
  • Interested intramural investigators
  • International contacts interested in collaborative cancer CAM research
  • Other granting organizations
