Standing Committee on Standards
Standing Committee on Training
Task Group on Implementation of Integrating Resources
Background:
Following the International Conference on the Principles and Future Development
of AACR in 1997, a paper was drafted to revise AACR2 to accommodate seriality.
The concept of integrating resources (a bibliographic resource that is added
to or changed by means of updates that do not remain discrete and are integrated
into the whole) was introduced and has been endorsed by the Joint Steering Committee
of AACR2 (JSC). The JSC is expected to finalize the rule revisions relating to
these changes in early to mid 2001.
A proposal will be presented for MARBI in June 2001 for a new code "i" for
integrating resources in the bibliographic level (Leader/07). This concept
has been widely discussed and has received universal support, but there remain
many questions relating to implementation. If MARBI does agree to the proposal,
it could take years before such a code is fully implemented in the utilities.
Currently, resources that would be treated as integrating resources are coded
Leader/07 value "m". A further issue for consideration is the fact that the
CONSER database is maintained via OCLC and redistributed through CDS but BIBCO
records do not reside in a single database and are not redistributed.
Charge
The PCC Policy Committee charges the Joint Standing Committee on Training and
Standing Committee on Standards Task Group on Implementation of Integrating Resources
(in the following order):
- Develop various scenarios whereby integrating resources are handled by
CONSER and/or BIBCO
- Recommend whether certain types of integrating resources should
be handled by CONSER and others by BIBCO libraries
- Recommend mechanisms to allow for either BIBCO or CONSER libraries
to update records for integrating resources prior to adoption of Leader/07,
value "i"(assuming that it is passed by MARBI)
- Recommend mechanisms to allow for either BIBCO or CONSER libraries
to update records for integrating resources following the adoption
of Leader/07, value "i" (assuming that it is passed by MARBI)
- Recommend appropriate types of and places for documentation relating to
integrating resources
- Recommend ways in which to meet training needs associated with cataloging
integrating resources
- Consider the maintenance
and distribution issues associated with integrating resources (including loose-leafs)
and recommend further action
Time frame: Interim report due April 30, 2001. Final report
due October 2001.
