Interested in establishing partnerships with organizations currently developing novel medical or environmental cell or tissue-based products for SBIR/STTR collaborative research.

Expertise Provided:
We have several methods for long term storage and distribution of highly perishable, living products that have potential applications for cells, natural tisues and engineered tissues. We have had a very high success rate with past SBIR/STTR proposals.

Our cell and tissue preservation research is focused primarily on developing products and processes employing low temperature biology to substantially improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of cell and tissue storage and transportation. CTS preservation technologies potentially impact a huge US patient population and the broad potential for U.S. economic benefits extrapolates to about one-half of the existing total health care costs. The CTS technology platform for cell and tissue preservation is based on four complementary strategies for optimization of cell survival. These include solutions designed to optimize cell survival during storage at refrigeration temperatures (0-10°C), strategies to deliver non-toxic cryoprotectants into cells, avoidance of damaging ice formation, and development of prototype freeze drying methods. Technology/Product Information: The products are preservation methods and formulations. We are actively seeking companies to partner with us and utilize our preservation technologies for their products and distribution areas. The target markets are cell and tissue research & toxicology target products including preservation and distribution of preserved cells, human cell and tissue banking for research distribution, allogeneic tissue banking, medical cell therapies. There are also many small niche market opportunities for research, toxicology testing and diagnostic kit products.

Looking for a research institute or laboratory capable of conducting research to validate the efficacy of a herbal preparation in the treatment of cancer and other immune related diseases.

Expertise Provided:
Our company has a herbal preparation which has been researched and the result published in a peer reviewed journal, " African Journal of Biotechnology". The abstract is reproduced below:

"Jubi Formula® is a herbal preparation made from three medicinal herbs . It has been reported to have been successfully used in the treatment of anaemia in humans. A study was therefore carried out to determine the effect of the preparation on packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations in anaemic rabbits. The PCV and Hb concentrations of healthy rabbits infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei were monitored for 49 days. T. b. brucei produced a significant reduction in PCV and Hb concentrations in all infected rabbits when compared with the controls (p<0.05). These hematological parameters were restored to normal levels in the anaemic rabbits by the herbal preparation. The anaemic rabbits not treated with the herbal preparation presented with a progressive decline in their PCV and Hb concentrations and majority of them died before the end of the study. Healthy rabbits that received daily doses of the herbal preparation showed gradual elevation in PCV and Hb concentrations which were maintained within normal range. Jubi Formula® can restore the PCV and Hb concentrations in anaemic conditions and is a potential substitute for blood transfusion. However, further studies are needed to investigate the potentials of the herbal preparation in reversing anaemia."

Key words: Anaemia, PCV, rabbits, haemoglobin, herbal preparation.

This product has been used in the traditional system to treat different types of cancer patients. We now want to collaborate with a research institute or laboratory to ascertain the relevance of the product for the treatment of cancer.

Seeking a business partner to submit an SBIR and to commercialize and support a “brain computer interface” product for paralyzed clients. The objective is to convert the already functioning laboratory system to a clinically useful, low-maintenance, low-cost, easy-to-use system that will revolutionize the lives of thousands of severely paralyzed people.

Expertise Provided:
The Laboratory of Nervous System Disorders (LNSD) of the Wadsworth Center, led by Dr. Jonathan R.Wolpaw has developed a new generation of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) that can provide both communication and control functions to those who have lost muscle control. By recording brain waves from the scalp and then decoding them, this radically new system allows people to move a computer cursor up and down and left and right, to spell words, and even to control a robotic arm [1]. The Wadsworth BCI system is a completely new technology and a major advance over conventional augmentative communication methods, which depend on muscle control and thus cannot be used by severely paralyzed people. The system is ideal for patients with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Athetoid cerebral palsy.

I am preparing a Fast Track SBIR grant proposal for the RFA "Innovations in Cancer Sample Preparation (RFA-CA-05-008). We have developed the HALO (Hematopoietic/Hemotoxicity Assays via Luminescence Output) Platform as a service and in kit form. A new kit is being developed so that it can be used for "in process quality control" of hematopoietic stem cell transplants into patients. I am looking for collaborating transplant centers who would be willing to supply us with frozen samples of mobilized peripheral blood, bone marrow and cord blood to be tested "blind" in order to validate the hypothesis that HALO could be used as a predictor of engraftment and multilineage reconstitution. I am looking for at least 20 samples of each tissue. The HALO results would then have to be compared with the clinical outcome ( whether engraftment took place, whether multilineage reconstitution occured etc) at the end of the study.

I am looking for a medical/biological research organization with pre-eminent qualifications to participate as a partner on a Phase I SBIR project....I am working on a technological approach that proposes the use of a special process to selectively destroy or deactivate various harmful/ toxic/ pathogenic agents or cell abnormalities without undue harm to the subject/ organ/ tissue or other biological material under treatment. Whereas, antibiotics, antivirals, chemotherapy drugs and the like generally have specificity towards a particular cell structure or metabolic function, the proposed therapeutic process instead relies on the sensitivity to treatment of generic structures present in the harmful agents. Specifically, by realizing that higher life forms (plants, animals, fungi and humans) differ from many of the infectious organisms, toxic agents and disease conditions due to the make-up of their cell wall structure, the basis for a new discovery for treatment of bacteria, viruses, and other diseases, infections, contaminants, etc. has been established.

We have developed anti-diabetes agent which is very effective for the tretment and prevention of diabetes. We obtained patent approval in the USA and several asian countries and Europe. This is consited of Cyclo (his-pro) (CHP) plus zinc. The major etiology of insulin resistance and leptin resistacne is Hyperinsulinemia due to the imbalance of energy intake and expenditure. This state induces Insulin degradation enzyme (IDE) deficiency in muscle and fat cells due to zinc deficiency plus over production of insulin . Zinc is an integral part of IDE and without zinc, IDE synthesis decreases resulting in insulin fragment accumulation in the cells, and impaired insulin signaling . On the other hand, CHP, stimulates intestinal zinc absorption and muscle zinc uptake . Correction of zinc metabolism should improve IDE synthesis. However, diabetic subjects and animals showed decreased intestinal zinc absorption and low plasma zinc levels. We have observed improved diabetes in Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, genetically diabetic Koto-Kakizaki rats, genetically diabetic obese ob/ob mice, and aged insulin resistant Sprague -Dawley rats with the treatment with CHP plus zinc. We have initiated clinical trials at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Based on human pre-clinical trial, we are absolutely sure that CHP plus zinc is very effective and safe anti-daietes agent. I was first succesful in obtianing SBIR phase 1 grant for the first time, but continuously failed to get a further fund

Thus, I need to have research partner who is knowledible with this area of study. I have published about 10 papers related to this project. I am specfically looking for diabetologist who will work together with me for the final FDA approval of CHP plus zinc for health claims.

Expertise Provided:

My company is developing a novel therapy for bruxism called "Taste-Based Approach to the Prevention of Teeth Clenching and Grinding." In the practical embodiment of the technique, a pair of sealed capsules containing a mildly aversive substance (capsaicin, vinegar, salt water, or the like) are suspended between the rear molars. When the teeth are brought together, which is required for clenching or grinding to occur, the capsules are ruptured and the resulting taste negatively reinforces the habit. The therapy is best characterized as a biofeedback approach. The approach has been tried by a few people (myself included,) with remarkable results. I have recently submitted a pre-IND request to the FDA in order to review the technique. NICDR has expressed interest in the approach and I am just begining an SBIR grant, although I would certainly consider an STTR with the right collaborator.

The development of the jtaste aversion approach is clearly multidisciplinary. I am in need of technical assistance regarding the following topics. 1) Clinical research collaborator to admister a clinical trial to demonstrate the efficacy of the approach. Ideally someone experienced in the field of sleep/bruxism research. 2) Orthodontist or someone similarly skilled in the field of dental appliances to consult on the development of the appliance to hold the capsules. 3) A doctor, dentist, or clinician who is qualified to comment on the safety of various substances delivered intraorally during sleep. (The quantity is quite small, approximately .5 ml)

Expertise Needed:
Small business concern having analytical measurement technology development expertise and experience in environmental or clinical medicine. Familiarity with immunoassay technology or nanoparticle-based sensors desirable.

Expertise Provided:
A novel type of nanoparticle that has both luminescent and magnetic properties was produced by flame-spray pyrolysis. These nanoparticles made of lanthanide oxides are promising fluorophores and serve as a new class of tags in biochemistry because of their large Stokes shift, sharp emission spectra, long lifetime and good photo-stability. These properties greatly reduce background signal-to-noise, vastly improving detection limits, increase sample stability, reduce sample volume requirements, facilitate quantitation and allow for new inexpensive "lab-on-a-chip" assay formats. The synthesis method offers low-cost, high-rate synthesis, allowing a wide range of biological applications of magnetic/fluorescent core/shell particles. The nanoparticles have been used to the visualize protein micropatterns. The fluorescent nanoparticle tag did not suffer any photobleaching during the observation, further demonstrating the suitability of Eu:Gd2O3 nanoparticles as fluorescent labels.

We have applied our magnetic/phosphor nanoparticles to a "lab-on-a-chip". The nanoparticles acted as antibody carriers; manipulation of the nanoparticles and separation was achieved with external electromagnets that also served to accelerate immuno-reactions by reducing detection time by a factor of about 10, while consuming very little reagent volume. Our assay is insensitive to the efficiency of separations or losses on walls allowing for improved quanititation. Multiplexed assays on the same nanophosphor substrate can be run by using multiple labels for the secondary antibodies, offering enhanced throughput.

The advances described above were made possible by grant number 5 P42 ES004699 from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, NIEHS. The description of the above technology are solely the responsibility of the authors posting the information and do not necessarily represent the official views of the NIEHS, NIH.

An established biotechnology transfer company, LLC or VCG with interest and background in developing anti-cancer vaccines using immunotherapy is needed. Searching for companies able to acquire and/or market new, innovative immunization technology. The technology offered is patent protected using a proposed universal tumor rejection antigen present on all mammalian cancer classes developed with many years of NIH/NCI support. Spin off technologies in the application of this vaccine technology are developed for commercialization through license agreements offered by the university's basic medical science foundation [SAMSF]. All human cancers express this protein.Normal adult tissues do express the tumor rejection [T-c cell activation] immunogen. Published, peer reviewed studies in several types of human cancer indicate that immunization against this purified, well characterized cell surface protein results in established tumor rejection . Phase I/2 collaborative clinical trials in the EU promoted tumor regression and long lasting remissions with human carcinomas and show promising results in patients with breast cancers and luekemias and lymphomas.

Bidders for the license to use this technology to treat, diagnose or monitor human cancer immunotherapy or other threrapy forms are patented protected. Resources are required to conclude a phase 1/2 clininical trial to show additional safety and efficacy of Dendritic Cell [DC] immunotherapy in patients with advanced breast cancer and to then seek the marketing of this license to a large manufacturer capable of producing this vaccine and securing FDA approval should apply for a teaming relationship with us. This patented technology is well described in the peer reviewed cancer immunobiology literature. STTR/SBIR funding is need to complete clinical trials in all major forms of human advanced cancer.

Expertise Provided:
See above please! We are searching for a qualified, small business dedicatred to cancer immunotherapy, early detection and therapy monitoring to acquire a full license agreement covering the above technology. The DC vaccine therapy showing success in treating advanced human cancers is ready for seeking FDA approval.

This new baking company is the outgrowth of the Vision's Sown Nutritional Anthropology Research Project that is seeking to discover whether ancient grains and indigenous medicinal botanicals incorporated into its experimental 'functional' and organic bakery products can lower cholesterol when incorporated into an overall heart smart diet. Our lead products have been lab tested and are able to make the FDA qualified health claim for nuts (almonds) and heart health. Additionally, the baked goods are low in saturated fat and sodium, high in fiber, contain essential mono & polyunsaturated fats predominantly and are cholesterol and trans fatty acid free. We are looking to have a diverse group of participants eat these baked goods exclusively over a period of time to monitor whether or not this unique dietary strategy can be successfully incorporated into a cholesterol lowering health plan.

Applications For Pressurized Air

Expertise Provided:
www.wickslifeline.com explains in greater detail how my dual purpose water pipe invention combats smoke as well as people`s inhalation of (a) the toxic smoke created in fires and (b) the noxious gases produced during a biological/chemical strike. The Wicks Lifeline Air System is built into the plumbing of fire resistant, compartmented structures. The pipes` conversion process automatically is triggered when the fire alarm sounds. Panicked, trapped victims only need to remember to shut the (restroom, bathroom, other room's) door. The prototype and demo units were built, tested, and validated at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. Building Officials and Code Administrators International, Chicago, IL also tested the Wicks Lifeline Air System and found it to be feasible (BOCA National Codes, Research Report #85-96). Numerous fire chiefs, fire marshals, and other fire industry pundits publicly endorse this product. For many reasons, the commercialization of the Wicks Lifeline Air System was held in abeyance. In 1998, though, I secured a revised patent on it. In November 2004, Stevens Institute of Technology encouraged us to seek SBIR/STTR funding since the War Against Terrorism makes this invention so timely!
