NOAA HAB Research Coordination
CSCOR has had a history of coordination on HAB issues with many offices across NOAA. Still, greater coordination is needed to most effectively implement research and application activities, and to prepare for the upcoming administrative transition. To meet these goals, NOAA offices will have a HAB coordination workshop in early Spring 2009. Below are examples of NOAA HAB efforts:
- HAB Forecasting in the Gulf of Mexico —NOAA's HAB Forecasting System supplies information on the location, extent, and potential for development or movement of harmful algal blooms in the Gulf of Mexico. This is a collaborative effort of NOAA Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment, NOAA CoastWatch, and NOAA Coastal Services Center and is operational in NOAA's Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS).
- The Harmful Algal Blooms Observing System (HABSOS) - HABSOS is implemented by NOAA NCDDC in partnership with NOAA CSC, the EPA Gulf of Mexico Program Office, and State agencies. HABSOS demonstrates an online, integrated information system for managing HAB data, events, and effects.
- Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research (CCEHBR), Marine Biotoxins Program
