Core Questions

Participating countries modify the questionnaire based on their needs. These versions contain the core and core expanded questions. Please see individual country pages for customized versions in English, and in native languages when available.

The ten GSHS core questionnaire modules measure the most important health behaviors and protective factors among students. At least six of the ten GSHS core questionnaire modules must be used by each country. Once a core questionnaire module is selected, all the questions in that module must be used without modification. Each core questionnaire module contains from 3 to 7 questions. The modules are

  • Alcohol and other drug use
  • Dietary behaviors
  • Hygiene
  • Mental health
  • Physical activity
  • Protective factors
  • Respondent demographics
  • Sexual behaviors that contribute to HIV infection, other sexually-transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy
  • Tobacco use
  • Violence and unintentional injury

Core-expanded questions can be used to collect more detailed information on selected core questionnaire module topics. Core-expanded questions may measure behaviors, knowledge, attitudes, skills, access to resources or information, or module-specific protective factors. Core-expanded questions share the same format characteristics as the core questionnaire modules.
