From Schongauer to Holbein: Master Drawings from Basel and Berlin
Overview: The exhibition featured drawings by Swiss and German artists of the Renaissance, drawn from the collections of the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, Kupferstichkabinett. 190 works dating from 1465 to 1545 by Martin Schongauer, Hans Holbein the Elder, Matthias Grünewald, Hans Baldung, Albrecht Altdorfer, Urs Graf, Hans Holbein the Younger, and other artists were shown. An earlier version of the exhibition was presented in Basel in 1997 and in Berlin in 1998.
The Washington presentation of the exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art in collaboration with the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel and the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin-Preussischer Kulturbesitz. Andrew Robison, Andrew W. Mellon senior curator of the National Gallery of Art, was curator of the exhibition in Washington. The exhibition was made possible by UBS AG. Additional support was provided by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Support for the catalogue was provided by Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland. The exhibition was supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
