Madeleine Albright
Awarded: April 2000
(b. May 15, 1937)
A naturalized citizen, Madeleine Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and came to the United States at age 11. In the first Clinton administration, she served as the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations and as a member of the National Security Council. Albright was sworn in as the 64th Secretary of State in January 1997 and was the first female to hold the high-ranking position.
