FY 2007 Information About Newspaper Processing

During Fiscal Year 2007, some 23,836 newspaper issues were received and checked in. The office has continued to play a significant role in the preservation of African newspapers. Throughout the year, a total of 657 reels (approximately 657, 000 pages) were collated and shipped to LC/New Delhi Office for microfilming as compared to 597 reels processed in FY2006. A list of newspapers filmed to date by LC New Delhi Office [PDF/15.0 kb] may be viewed by clicking on the link above.

Another significant achievement for the year dealt with back issues of Congolese newspapers. Following the success of last year's CAMP proposal, the FD submitted a new proposal to the CAMP/CRL group of the ALC and sufficient funds were raised to film a significant amount of Congolese newspaper backlog totaling 138 titles dating from 1987-2005. The office also received news of another funding source of $64,000 from the Library's Madison Council to film the oldest African newspapers in the office backlog. To date, 140 reels (approximately 140, 000 pages) have been collated, packed and shipped to the Library for filming.
