Project Spotlight: Independent Resources

Independent Resources (InRe) has increased visibility through work in national projects such as Recreation Facility Analysis (RFA), Recreation Fee Program and the Recreation Site Improvement project. These projects give InRe an outstanding opportunity to take national initiatives all the way from idea to implementation. This involvement across organizational levels with the same issues is key to the quality and continuity of services.

A major accomplishment this year was continuation of the RFA process nationwide. This project is changing how the Forest Service approaches recreation management and has increased the visibility of recreation with management teams across the country. Based on RFA results, the Forest Service received nearly $95 million from the Office of Management and Budget to focus recreation sites deferred maintenance.

InRe team members are known for expertise with the Recreation Enhancement Act. The team was instrumental in developing the tools forests use to analyze their fee programs, establishing Recreation Resource Advisory Committees and providing key staff work and guidance on critical issues relating to the continuation of this program. InRe completed a review of the R3 Fee Program that has the potential to significantly improve the fee program regionally and nationally if adopted.

In 2007 the unit completed a Facility Analysis for the Pacific Northwest Research Station. The project was based on the logic of RFA and received good feedback. InRe hopes to further this Facility Analysis offering.
