Project Spotlight: Adaptive Management Services (AMSET)

AMSET had several notable accomplishments this year. The first was in the area of Fire Fuels Treatment Effectiveness. AMSET was used by The Natural Resources Conservation Service, through San Bernardino County Fire Department, to perform an evaluation of the effectiveness of completed fuels treatments on private and public lands in the Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear regions of the San Bernardino Mountains. AMSET was also hired by the Washington Office to conduct four separate evaluations of the effectiveness of fuels treatments on fire spread and aiding suppression, as well as by Region 8 and the Quincy Library Group to evaluate effectiveness of fuel treatments on two specific fires. Each evaluation had a different emphasis and all provided information on protection of resources and communities as well as capturing data to validate the effectiveness of the national fuels treatment program.

The second area of accomplishment was in providing support to National Business Operations across the Agency. AMSET provided administrative services to Fire and Aviation Management in Region 5, the Enterprise Program as a whole, and numerous individual Enterprise Units. AMSET also provided support of a national web based forum for Forest Service employees to ask Business Operations Transformation Program related questions. AMSET participated in a Fire Cost Review for three large fires in Region 5 to determine ways to improve their own business processes in that area.

Overall, the specialized expertise of AMSET in fire and fuels, special uses and administrative support, and adaptability in offerings allows the unit to support various regions and agencies in accomplishing tasks not normally accomplished themselves.
