Enterprise Program Update

I don’t need to tell you that there continues to be a lot going on with the Enterprise Program as all of you are doing loads of great stuff in support of the agency mission. In thissue I would like to highlight two topics: the recently completed accelerator training and the “move” to Region 7.

During the week of April 23 the accelerator training group had its third, and final, week together. The participants presented business cases to their colleagues and representatives of the Steering Committee: Maribeth Gustafson and Gifford Pinchot III. All of the presentations were very well done and my hat goes off to all of the trainees. In addition to what they learned from the training itself, and the opportunity they had to learn from colleagues in other Enterprise Units, this cadre also provided valuable feedback on how to improve upon the training. Those insights will be helpful as future trainings are designed, most likely individuals whose prospectuses are approved by the Steering Committee (based on the call letter, due date 6/29). No dates have yet been set for that training, perhaps later this calendar year.

You may have heard about the pending “move” to Region 7. I would like to explain more about what it is s well as is not. It is planned to be effective on 10/1/07 and is a financial “move”. That is, we will migrate all of the Enterprise Program accounts from Region 5 (0544) to accounts in Region 7. It is a good thing, in that we will have our separate accounts. A clean slate, so to speak. Reba Trujillo is taking the lead on this effort. She is working closely with the Albuquerque Budget & Finance staff and, as needed, she will also work with staff from your respective Enterprise Units. While R7 will provide us with our “space”, we will remain WO employees. We will not house our organizational (HR) codes in Region 7. Though only a financial migration, I still think it will be a cool marketing opportunity, as the new Region 7.

Enterprising Business Operations

The Business Operations Transformation Team (BOTT) may have set a record – the most enterprise units working collectively on a project. Out of the eight core members of the BOTT, six of them are from the Enterprise Program – five from different units.

The Business Operations Transformation Team was commissioned in 2006, by Deputy Chief for Business Operations Hank Kashdan to lead the transition to new centralized systems in Budget and Finance, Human Capital Management, and Information Resources Management. Understanding this shift to centralized systems and services and providing an avenue for dialog about these changes are primary reasons for the teams’ existence.

The BOTT is directed from the Business Operations Deputy Chief's office and lead by Program Coordinator, Linda Feldman. Rather than creating a new staff, the team is comprised of members of various Enterprise Teams within the Forest Service, along with members from the Washington Office. The team will work closely with communications staff and others from Budget and Finance, Information Resources Management, and Human Capital Management. The team members are:

Bridging the Funding Gap

The Forest Service, along with other federal partners, has created a website designed as a capacity building tool appropriately called "The Toolbox for the Great Outdoors”. For agency managers who are self-motivated, resourceful, and open-minded to new ways of doing business, this "toolbox" contains a wide variety of project funding solutions for those in need of additional financing. With the tools provided on this website, public land managers and partners (including nonprofit organizations), have complete access to dozens of funding sources. The resources can be used to initiate new projects with gateway communities, partner with organizations to leverage appropriated funding, or complete projects that are unfunded. Now managers can identify and use a number of new human and financial assets, combining them with contributions from various sources to tackle projects and solve problems. Visit the website at http://www.tools4outdoors.us to get started on funding.
