Background
Kathi received a B.A. in Biology from Whitworth College in 1989, an M.S. in Marine Science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in 1995, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2001. She began working at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center as a National Academy of Sciences NRC Post-doctoral Fellow in 2001. She is currently a Research Biologist in the Marine Biotoxins Group and PI on an Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (ECOHAB) research project that looks at the effects of algal toxins on early life history stages of fish. She is also the leader for the Marine Biotoxins Analytical team.
Current Research
Kathi's research focuses on the impacts of harmful algal blooms on planktivorous fish populations. Her research encompasses four main topics: 1) trophic transfer of algal toxins through marine food webs to higher level consumers via planktivorous fish vectors, 2) dynamics of toxin accumulation, uptake, and tissue distribution in fish vector species under various bloom conditions, 3) neurotoxic effects of dietary intake of algal toxins in fish, and 4) sublethal developmental and neurosensory effects of aqueous toxin exposure in early embryonic and larval stages.
