July 8-9, 2008

Conference Registration: http://www.tech-res-intl.com/NLMInformatics2008/default.html
Call for Abstracts: http://www.tech-res-intl.com/NLMInformatics2008/abstracts.html

The 2008 Informatics Training Conference will be held at the NIH Campus, Natcher Building 45, in the main auditorium on July 8-9, 2008. All trainees on full-time NLM appointments at the 20 institutionally-based programs as of the date of the conference, including trainees in the NLM-RWJF public health informatics initiative, are expected to attend this meeting. Trainees appointed at the Veterans Administration (VA) sponsored training programs and trainees in the CDC Public Health Informatics training program are also invited to attend and make presentations as outlined below.

Research Presentation Formats:

As in 2007, trainee research will be presented at this meeting in three different formats.

1. Plenary sessions. We expect that 18-22 papers will be presented to the entire assembly. Each plenary presentation will be no more than 15 minutes, including questions. We plan to organize the plenaries around four training themes: health care informatics; bioinformatics/computational biology; clinical research translational informatics; and public health informatics.

2. Focus sessions. We expect that approximately 20-30 papers will be presented in parallel sessions. For focus sessions, each presentation will be no more than 10 minutes, including questions. Focus sessions will emphasize common techniques and sub-domains of interest within the four training themes of health care informatics; bioinformatics/computational biology; clinical research translational informatics; and public health informatics.

3. Poster sessions. There will be specific 'protected' periods of time allocated during the conference for trainees to present their research in poster format. Posters will be grouped thematically by the four training themes.

Plenary/Focus Session Abstract Submissions:

The deadline for all Plenary and Focus Session abstracts is 5:00 p.m. EST on March 7, 2008 (by electronic mail to Christine Ireland at irelanc@mail.nih.gov). Each program may send two abstracts describing research projects conducted by its informatics trainees funded by NLM, VA or CDC. For Plenary sessions, presentations should describe research that is mature or recently completed, having results to report. For Focus sessions, presentations may describe either work that is mature/recently completed or is just getting underway. All submitted abstracts meeting these basic requirements will be presented in either a plenary or a focus session. NLM staff will allocate papers to plenary or focus sessions. Instructions and an example for preparing these abstracts are available at http://www.tech-res-intl.com/NLMInformatics2008/abstracts.html. We ask that you ensure that all submissions conform to these instructions before sending them to us. As part of the abstract, please provide the e-mail address and full name of the first presenter for each presentation or poster.

Poster Abstract Submissions:

The deadline for Poster abstracts will also be 5:00 p.m. EST on March 7th (by electronic mail to Christine Ireland at irelanc@mail.nih.gov). Each program may submit no more than two poster abstracts with the exception of Harvard which, due to the size of its trainee pool, may submit 4 poster abstracts. Posters may present research at any stage of development: mature, ongoing, or just beginning. Poster abstracts should follow the same format as the Plenary and Focus session abstracts. More details about poster presentations are at http://www.tech-res-intl.com/NLMInformatics2008/abstracts.html. Trainees proposed as Plenary Session presenters should not be first authors on submitted posters.

Please feel free to contact Dr. Valerie Florance or Christine Ireland with any questions about this plan and/or the presentation formats. Also, please let us know as soon as possible if your program does not plan to submit their full quota of abstracts for the plenary, focus sessions, or poster sessions. It is likely that we will offer open slots to other programs. Hotel/Registration Information: The web site for the Informatics Training Conference is http://www.tech-res-intl.com/NLMInformatics2008/default.html and has complete information on registering for the conference as well as where to make hotel reservations. An agenda will be posted to this site around mid-March.

The NLM/RWJF PHI Network Event is tentatively scheduled for July 7, 2008.
