Detailed Diagnoses and Procedures, National Hospital Discharge Survey, 1996 A compilation of hospital utilization statistics for 1996 has been published by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). These comprehensive hospitalization data are presented by NCHS annually in the report, "Detailed Diagnoses and Procedures, National Hospital Discharge Survey." The 1996 edition of the report presents statistics on diagnosed conditions and surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed in non-Federal short-stay hospitals. Diagnoses and procedures presented are coded according to the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification or ICD-9-CM. Data are shown by age and sex of the patient and by geographic region of the hospitals. The report is intended as a source document for researchers and others who need for detailed diagnostic and procedure categories. The data for this report are collected as part of NCHS National Hospital Discharge Survey which has been conducted annually since 1965. Approximately 480 hospitals participated in the 1996 survey.
