Number of Persons Initiating Treatment for End-Stage Renal Disease Related to Diabetes, United States, 1984–2002

The number of persons who began treatment for End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) attributable to diabetes increased from about 7,000 in 1984 to slightly more than 43,600 in 2002. The rate of increase in the number of new cases, however, has slowed since 1997.
