Summary: |
Sound recordings made between 1931-1937 documenting English dialects, mostly from New England and eastern Canada, for a proposed Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada project. Most informants were elderly New Englanders, and included whalers, fisherman, farmers, and housewives. Among the well-known people who were recorded are Alistair Cooke, Charles H. Grandgent, John A. Lomax, Alan Lomax, Edward Sapir, James Joyce, and B. F. Skinner. Some recordings were made of Gullah dialects found on the Georgia and South Carolina coast and recordings include narratives of former slaves. Several recordings document other languages and regions. The collection includes project correspondence, transcriptions, and index cards.
