                          ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION


      The papers of Samuel Eliot Morison (1887-1976), naval
officer and historian, were deposited in the Library of Congress
by the Naval Historical Foundation in 1994 and converted to gift
in 1998.

      The status of copyright in the unpublished writings of
Samuel Eliot Morison is governed by the Copyright Law of the
United States (Title 17, U.S.C.).

    Readers interested in consulting any of the division's       
    collections are advised to write or telephone the            
    Manuscript Reading Room at (202) 707-5387 before visiting.

                            SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE


      The papers of Samuel Eliot Morison span the years 1939-1972,
with the bulk of the material dated between 1942 and 1956. 
Journals kept during World War II and updated afterward relate to
the oceanic theaters of the war.  Some entries were written
during battles, and others record interviews with W. H. P.
Blandy, Andrew B. Cunningham, Royal E. Ingersoll, Harry Kelly,
Douglas MacArthur, Henry S. Moore, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Raymond
A. Spruance, Harold R. Stark, Richmond K. Turner, and other
prominent wartime personalities.  Specific topics include the
battles of Casablanca, Guadalcanal, Kombangara, and Pearl Harbor
and operations Dragoon, Galvanic, Neptune, Overlord, and Torch. 
Notebooks compiled during Morison's research for his books are
arranged alphabetically by book title.  The journals are arranged
numerically by journal number.
