NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART'S TERRACE CAFÉ OFFERS
CENTRAL AMERICAN MENU AND LATIN JAZZ DURING
"COURTLY ART OF THE ANCIENT MAYA" EXHIBITION

Washington, DC -- In celebration of the exhibition Courtly Art of the Ancient Maya, the Terrace Café is offering a buffet-style brunch influenced by the flavors of Central America every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., April 4 through July 25. The brunch will be accompanied by Latin jazz performed by top local and regional musicians. The Terrace Café is located on the mezzanine level of the East Building, overlooking the atrium and the National Mall, at 4th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW.

The buffet includes scrambled eggs, seasoned pico de gallo; fish casserole made with onions, peppers, and Recado Colorado (a marinade made from ground annatto seeds and oranges); pork loin stuffed with prunes, apples, and potatoes, cooked in an apple cider crème sauce; grilled salad (hearts of romaine, seasonal young greens, avocado, red onions, radish, tomato, and queso anejo--a firm white aged cheese made from cow's, goat's, or sheep's milk); sweet potato puree; assorted empanadas; quinoa grain salad with roasted apple and citrus herb vinaigrette; spinach salad tossed with jicama (a crisp tuber with potato-like texture and a sweet apple flavor) and hibiscus flower dressing; and a salad of tomato, jicama, cilantro, and field greens. Desserts will include rice pudding with goat's milk caramel flavoring, Mexican dark chocolate cake, sponge cake with shaved coconut and orange zest, and marinated seasonal fruits. The cost of the buffet is $19.95 per person and $8.95 for children ten and under. Reservations for ten or more should be made by calling (202) 216-5966.

Courtly Art of the Ancient Maya features over 130 masterworks drawn from collections in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Australia, Europe, and the United States and explores the artistic world inside the royal courts of the ancient Maya. Objects on view include stone sculptures, ceramics, and masks, organized around key themes of the life of the Maya court: divine models of courtly culture, women's roles and status at court, and the court at war.

General Information

The National Gallery of Art and its Sculpture Garden are at all times free to the public. They are located on the National Mall between 3rd and 9th Streets at Constitution Avenue NW, and are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed on December 25 and January 1. Visitors will be asked to present all carried items for inspection upon entering the East and West Buildings. Checkrooms are free of charge and located at each entrance. Luggage and other oversized bags must be presented at the 4th Street entrances to the East or West Building to permit x-ray screening and must be deposited in the checkrooms at those entrances. For the safety of visitors and the works of art, nothing may be carried into the Gallery on a visitor's back. Any bag or other items that cannot be carried reasonably and safely in some other manner must be left in the checkrooms. Items larger than 17 x 26 inches cannot be accepted by the Gallery or its checkrooms.
