Private Forests Could Do More to Offset Carbon Emissions
New Industry-Conservation Coalition Calls on Congress to Act

A new coalition representing virtually all sectors of the forest community—the forest products industry, conservation and wildlife groups, foresters, private forest owners, academics, and the carbon finance sector—today called upon Congress to include private working forests as a central part of federal climate change policy. AFF, along with The Trust for Public Land launched the diverse group a year ago.

Drue DeBerry, Senior Vice President for Conservation, AFF said “In the end, it was too important not to agree on core principles, especially the urgency of stepping up forests’ capacity to remove carbon emissions from the atmosphere. It’s cost effective, it’s ready now, and it works—while at the same time conserving water, wildlife and flood control properties of forests.” LEARN MORE

AFF Publishes Two New Conservation Forestry Handbooks
AFF’s Center for Conservation Solutions released two new handbooks focusing on forest management strategies for the conservation of the imperiled gopher tortoise in Georgia and Florida. The handbooks for family forest owners and resource professionals are state-specific and build on the region-wide initiative for longleaf restoration in the southeastern coastal plain.

Congress has passed its $790 billion economic stimulus package and showed strong support for family forests
The package includes $250 million for U.S. Forest Service, state and private forestry programs. This funding is to be spent on hazardous fuels, forest health, ecosystem improvement, and biomass utilization projects that are "shovel ready" and create jobs. The package also includes incentives for renewable energy production from forests.

AFF applauds Congress' action in support of family forest owners and the communities that rely on these forests for economic security and environmental benefits.
