The Plant-a-Tree program was established to give individuals and groups an opportunity to contribute toward reforestation and tree planting efforts on National Forest lands. The program exists for all 155 National Forests; Pennsylvania's only National Forest is the Allegheny National Forest, which covers over 513,000 acres in northwest Pennsylvania in Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren counties.

Plant-a-Tree contributions may be made by groups and individuals in their own name, to honor others who are celebrating a significant event in their lives, or as a memorial to someone. The funds are used to purchase and plant tree and shrub seedlings. The seedlings selected for the Allegheny National Forest are often species that benefit wildlife during the winter months, such as native shrubs that hold their berries late into the winter or evergreen trees that have low sheltering boughs. Sometimes, other tree species, such as oak, may be planted. Usually 10-15 seedlings can be planted for every donation of $10 or more.

The seedlings are planted throughout the Allegheny National Forest in areas where there is the greatest need. The areas where trees are planted are not marked in any way.

People whose names are listed on the Plant-a-Tree request receive a certificate acknowledging the gift. Those who make donations receive a copy of the certificate. Individual trees can not be marked to recognize gifts.

The Plant-a-Tree contributions are tax deductible.

If you would like more information about the Plant-a-Tree program, please contact the Allegheny National Forest at (814) 362-4613, Bradford Ranger District, Plant-A-Tree 29 Forest Service Drive, Bradford, PA 16701.
