PRESCRIBED BURNS PLANNED IN SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO |

The Bureau of Land Management is planning a series of prescribed burns within southern New Mexico over the next couple of weeks. Ten to 15 BLM firefighters and personnel will monitor the fires. Smoke will be evident in the burn areas and some smoke may remain for a couple of days after the burn depending on wind direction and speed.
Tuesday, January 13 through Sunday, January 18, the BLM will concentrate their efforts in the Bent and Timberon areas in the Sacramento Mountains in south central New Mexico. Smoke from the fire may be visible from Timberon and along Highways 506 and potentially 54. Smoke from the Bent project will be visible for Ruidoso, Mescalero and Highway 70.
Prep work for the burn at the Dripping Springs Natural Area in the Organ Mountains will begin on January 19, with the actual burn conducted on over the next two days. The Dripping Spring Natural area will be closed on Jan 20 and 21. On January 23, crews will move on to the Centennial Bombing Range on McGregor Range.
Prescribed burning is one of the most effective tools to control vegetation in areas where wildfires are no longer appropriate. By reducing the volume of vegetation under the specific prescribed conditions, land managers mimic the natural fire cycle which greatly reduces the dangers and risks associated with unplanned wildfires.

Edgewood Prescribed Burn |
| |
The burn project is being implemented to minimize the risk of a large-scale, high-intensity wildfire spreading to or from the community of Edgewood and to reduce the risk of life, property, and natural resources. Depending on prevailing winds and other weather conditions, burn operations may occur on any day within the period of January 6 through January 31, 2009. BLM fire management employees will be burning piles of juniper and pinon trees that were thinned from 40 acres of public lands over the past year. Prescribed Burns Planned for Copper Hill, west of Chamisal, NM, Arroyo de Plaza Larga, (31 mile), west of Espanola, NM and Cerro del Aire (Wind Mountain), northeast of Tres Piedras,NM. Weather permitting, burn operations could be on any day within the period of January 6 through January 31, 2009. These projects are being implemented to minimize the risk of a large-scale, high-intensity wildfire spreading to or from the communities of Chamisal, Espanola, and Tres Piedras.
