Recovery Activities

The ultimate goal of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is the recovery (and subsequent preservation) of endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems on which they depend. A variety of methods and procedures are used to recover listed species, such as protective management measures (fencing nests, propagating young, preserving seeds), habitat acquisition and restoration, monitoring individuals or populations and augmenting or introducing populations.

Generally a recovery plan is developed for each listed species. This plan includes a life history description, a discussion on the threats to the species, conservation strategies and goals for the recovery of the species. Targets are set that will, once met, signal that the threat of extinction for the species has been eliminated and that the species no longer needs federal protection. At this point, the species will be delisted (pdf size 5.4MB). A period of post-delisting monitoring ensures that the species is, indeed, doing well.
