WISE EARS!® Welcomes New Partners

Sertoma International recently joined WISE EARS!® Sertoma International (SERvice TO Mankind) is a volunteer service organization of 25,000 members in 750 clubs across North America. Its primary focus is communication disorders, but its clubs also sponsor projects in national heritage, youth, and other community needs. Sertoma offers scholarships for graduate study in audiology and speech pathology and for undergraduate students with hearing loss pursuing degrees in any field. Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, Inc. (OPEI) recently joined WISE EARS!® OPEI is the major international trade association representing the manufacturers and their suppliers of consumer and commercial outdoor power equipment such as lawnmowers, garden tractors, utility vehicles, trimmers, edgers, chain saws, snow throwers, tillers, leaf blowers, and other related products. Founded in 1952, the Institute is dedicated to promoting the outdoor power equipment industry by undertaking activities that can be pursued more effectively by an association than by individual companies. Howard Leight Industries
Howard Leight Industries (HLI), www.howardleight.com, is the largest manufacturer in the industrial market and the innovative leader in providing the best quality hearing protection products at the highest level of hearing protection available.

HLI donated earplugs to the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, AK, for their safety and health fair for employees to be held in December.

Hearing Aid Music Foundation
"Listen Smart"--an educational film featuring Moby, Ozzy Osbourne, Cyndi Lauper, Deborah Harry of Blondie, Wyclef Jean, and Linkin Park, as well as other music celebrities to educate students about safe listening practices--will go out with a teacher's aid booklet to educators.

H.E.A.R.
Entertainment Commission Hearing: Earplug ordinance for San Francisco Entertainment Clubs--H.E.A.R. is thrilled to work with Supervisor Mark Leno, Nathan Purkiss, John Wood, Terrance Alan, DJ Liam Shy of SFLNCL, and Stephen Ellis, MD of the Dance Health Task Force and others on passing the Earplug Ordinance for San Francisco clubs. The ordinance requires places of entertainment and after-hours premises with a dance floor and a capacity of 500 persons or more to provide or sell at a reasonable cost earplugs to patrons.

At the 18th Annual TEC Awards, held on October 7, 2002, at the Audio Engineering Society Conference in Los Angeles, CA and the music industry sponsor outstanding commitment to support H.E.A.R. and the House Ear Institute in their efforts to provide hearing education awareness outreach to the music community and the public.

H.E.A.R. was featured on Discovery Health TV: Amazing Body Part--Eye and Ear in September.

News From the NIDCD

The NIDCD launched its new, more user-friendly Web site, located at www.nidcd.nih.gov, on December 2. Consumers, researchers, and healthcare professionals who visit the site will find it easier than ever to access information about disorders of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language.

Association of American Indian Physicians Conference
Representatives of NIDCD's Office of Health Communication and Public Liaison and Equal Employment Office distributed WISE EARS!® packets and information on the student partnership program at the 31st annual conference of the Association of American Indian Physicians, held in Anchorage, Alaska, Aug. 3-5. The conference was attended by approximately 200 American Indian and Alaska Native physicians and students.

Hispanic Health Fairs
WISE EARS!® materials in both English and Spanish were distributed to thousands of people who took part in health fairs held from July to October 2002 in ten U.S. cities with large Hispanic populations. The health fairs were organized and sponsored by RadioUnica, the nation's leading Hispanic media company, in collaboration with Wal-Mart stores. The fairs were held in Panorama City and Fresno, California; McAllen, San Antonio, and Houston, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; Hialeah Gardens, Florida; Bedford Park, Illinois; and Uniondale, New York. A total of 23,750 attended the RadioUnica health fairs! Aired multiple times on RadioUnica during the month of September, the WISE EARS!® message reached an estimated 70,500 Hispanic listeners aged 18+ per airing.
