Current Conditions - Roads

Accessiblity of the various roads and trails on the forest depends on the time of year and the weather. Some road conditions can be predicted, others can not. Unpredictable events of nature can produce road hazards which may not be cleared upon your arrival. Be flexible and enjoy the journey!

Important Notice: WHEELED MOTOR VEHICLE RESTRICTIONS IMPLEMENTED The Forest Service is complying with a Federal court order to keep all wheeled motorized travel in the Eldorado National Forest on system roads and trails. Beginning August 25, 2005, wheeled motor vehicles are allowed to operate only on the 2,200 miles of system roads and motorized trails shown as open on the new Motorized Vehicle Restrictions Map, hard copies are available free-of-charge at Eldorado National Forest offices. All other routes have been closed by court order and interim Forest Order. Links to the Forest Order #03-05-07 and the Recreation Opportunity Guide for using Motorized Vehicles on the Eldorado National Forest are available below:

Tip: "Closed by snow" means that the road/trail does not have a gate and access is controlled by Mother Nature.

NOTE: Starting in January 2009, the Eldorado National Forest will begin implementation of the new designated route system which will include seasonal closure of dirt roads and trails from January 1 through March 31. Seasonal closures may be longer if roads or trails are wet and susceptible to damage.

Check our Forest Information Update for any recent changes.
