Little Granite Creek Trail #112

TRAIL BEGINNING: At its junction with the Seven DevilsTrail #124, near Hibbs Cow Camp.

TRAIL ENDING: Near Granite Creek on the Snake River.

ACCESS:

From Riggins, take State Highway 95 south one mile to the Seven Devils Road, Forest Road #517. This is a steep, one lane gravel road with turnouts, and is fairly rough for the last few miles. Although adequate for most passenger cars, it is not recommended for RV's or travel trailers. It is generally open from early July to mid October. It is 17 miles to the Windy Saddle Trailhead and generally takes about one hour.

Windy Saddle Trailhead provides adequate parking and stock facilities for Wilderness travelers. Overnight Camping facilities are also available on site, and stock water is available ¼ mile down the Seven Devils Trail.

From Windy Saddle Trailhead, follow the Seven Devils Trail # 124, 6 miles to Hibbs Cow Camp area. This trail may also be accessed at the lower end by the Snake River National Recreation Trail #102 from Pittsburg Landing.

ATTRACTIONS:

The Little Granite Creek Trail is the shortest route from the alpine country of the Seven Devils Mountains to the Snake River in Hells Canyon. At the bottom of the trail, pass through the historic Hibbs Ranch before following Granite Creek to the Snake River. The section of trail between Hibbs Ranch and the Snake River is a popular day hike for river users.

CONSIDERATIONS:

This trail is one of the steepest in Hells Canyon. It drops 5,710 feet in elevation in the first 5 miles! The trail is primitive and maintenance is sporatic. Currently the trail is not recommended for stock use due to washouts and other hazards. Dispersed campsites are rare after leaving Hibbs Cow Camp, until the lower elevation area is reached. The lower elevation sections are extremely brushy. Rattlesnakes, poison ivy, and stinging nettle are common along this trail. Please check with the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area office in Riggins for current conditions on this trail.
