OCS Report MMS 1997-0019
Contents
Introduction
An assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources of the Pacific
Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Region of the United States (the Federal offshore area of
California, Oregon, and Washington) was performed by the Minerals Management Service (MMS)
as part of a national assessment of oil and gas resources. The regional assessment, which
was performed from 1992 to 1996 using data available as of January 1995, indicates that a
large volume of undiscovered oil and gas resources exists in the Region.
The oil and gas commodities, resource categories, areas, data, methodologies,
and results of the regional assessment are documented in OCS Report MMS 97-0019, entitled 1995
National Assessment of United States Oil and Gas Resources--Assessment of the Pacific
Outer Continental Shelf Region. The information presented in the report provides a
basis for scientists and administrators to identify areas where undiscovered oil and gas
may exist and will assist MMS and other decisionmakers in making sound judgments regarding
future leasing and exploration of the Region. The report will be of particular interest to
those seeking a better understanding of the petroleum geology of the Pacific coastal area
and its oil and gas resources, as well as others involved in oil and gas assessment,
exploration, and development. The report is available in printed and digital formats.
