HARRISBURG -State and federal financial assistance to help individuals, families and businesses recover from losses suffered as a result of flooding from September tropical storms has exceeded $51 million.
Of that figure, more than $36.4 million was approved for Housing Assistance grants and $14.7 million was approved for Other Needs Assistance grants to help with disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or met by charitable organizations.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has received applications for aid from 28,274 residents of 58 counties designated under the disaster declarations.
Homeowners, renters and businesses in designated counties who sustained damages and losses that were uninsured or underinsured have until Nov. 18 to register for disaster assistance with FEMA and to apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
FEMA's toll-free application number - 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) - is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The TTY number is 1-800-462-7585 for applicants who are speech or hearing impaired. Registration also is available online at www.fema.gov.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
