Winter Vehicle Restrictions

Tahoe National Forest

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(a) and (b), and to protect natural resources and public safety, the following acts are prohibited within the Tahoe National Forest. This order is effective from December 23, 2005, through April 30, 2008. The prohibitions contained in this Order apply only when there is snow on the ground. 

1.        Using or possessing a motor vehicle off of a National  Forest System road in the Pole Creek, Sagehen, Donner Summit, Babbitt, Steephollow, North Yuba, North Fork American River, Placer Big Trees, and Oak Flat closure areas shown on the attached map. 36 CFR 261.56.

2.        Using or possessing a motor vehicle on National Forest System roads in the Pole Creek, Sagehen, Donner Summit, Babbitt, Steephollow, Placer Big Trees, and North Yuba closure areas as shown on the attached map.

3.        Using or possessing a motor vehicle on National Forest System trails in the Pole Creek, Sagehen, Donner Summit, Babbitt, Steephollow, Placer Big Trees, and North Yuba closure areas as shown on the attached map.
36 CFR 261.55(b).

4.        Using or possessing a motor vehicle in the Kyburz closure area from February 1, 2006, through July 15, 2006, from February 1, 2007, through July 15, 2007, and from February 1, 2008, through April 30, 2008. The Kyburz closure area is shown on the attached map. 36 CFR 261.56.

Note: For the purpose of this order, a wheelchair is not considered to be a motor vehicle.

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this order:

1.        Persons with a permit from the Forest Service specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.

2.        Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions contained in 36 CFR Part 261, Subpart A.

A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.
