Lightning Safety

Lightning storms are common summer events throughout the Sierra Nevada, and are often exciting, annoying, and scary for many people.

Many of the mountaintop destinations we favor as hikers and explorers are also prime locations for lightning strikes. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration) has compiled a great deal of science and safety related information about lightning on their lightning page.
