"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." Robert Frost The Road Not Taken, 1915 Robert Frost was born in San Francisco in 1874 and died in Boston in 1963. In the years between, he won four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry and established himself as one of the leading poets of the 20th Century. While associated with pastoral New England themes, Frost wrote poems with universal appeal. While his verse forms are traditional he pioneered the interplay of rhythm and meter and in the poetic use of vocabulary and inflections in everyday speech. Frost moved to New England at age 11 after his father died and they lived with his paternal grandfather. In 1895 he married Elinor White, with whom he had six children. From 1897 to 1899, he attended Harvard but left before receiving his degree. During this period he continued to write poems but published very few. His paternal grandfather bought them a farm which he worked until 1912 when he sold it and moved the family to England to devote himself to full time writing. He experienced almost immediate success with "A Boy's Will" followed by "North of Boston." He returned to America in 1915 and his success allowed him to buy a farm in Franconia, New Hampshire. With his life entirely devoted to poetry, he received his first Pulitzer Prize in 1924 for "New Hampshire." He won again in 1930, 1936, and 1942. Frost's poetic and political conservatism, brought him dis-favor among some of his critics but he continued to write until his death in 1963. Early in his life he was quoted as saying his life's ambition was to write "a few poems it will be hard to get rid of."
