Weekly Flood Recovery Update: $2 Million in Disaster Assistance Approved

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- More than $2.2 million in federal and state disaster assistance has been approved to date for West Virginians, according to state and federal disaster officials. The aid is being provided following the Feb. 28 presidential declaration resulting from the storms, landslides and flash flooding that struck the state in mid-February.

DISASTER RECOVERY AT A GLANCE

The American Red Cross served 2109 meals, opened 16 shelters during the height of the disaster, sheltered 125 people, issued 762 Clean Up kits and 654 Comfort kits.

A total of 29 Kickoff Meetings were held with local and state governments, special districts and private non-profit organizations to review the process of submitting Project Worksheets. In addition there have been 5 applicant briefings to date. A number of requests for public assistance have been received to date. More than $4 million has been obligated by FEMA for Infrastructure repairs including debris removal, protective measures, roads and bridges, water control facilities, public buildings, public utilities and other miscellaneous categories.

The toll-free registration line is available to homeowners, renters and business owners in the 25-county declared disaster area who suffered losses in the Feb. 18 storms. Disaster victims are encouraged to register for federal and state disaster assistance by calling 1-800-462-9029 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech impaired. Regular hours of operation are from 8 AM to 6 PM seven days a week.
