CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Federal and state disaster officials have approved more than $4.7 million in individual and infrastructure repair assistance for damages from flash flooding, storms and landslides in February, it was announced today.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) received a total of 1,258 applications for individual assistance. Applications are still being processed.

Since President Clinton declared 26 counties disaster areas eligible for assistance eight weeks ago, FEMA assistance to date includes:

Disaster housing assistance provides grants for alternate rental housing or emergency repairs to make a residence safe to live in. IFG grants, administered by the state, meet serious needs and necessary expenses not covered by any other assistance programs.

The deadline for residents or business owners to apply for federal and state disaster assistance is April 28. The toll-free telephone registration number is 1-800-462-9029. Those with hearing impairments may dial 1-800-462-7585 (TTY). Both lines operate Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M. April 28 also is the deadline to return SBA loan application packets.

More than $1 million in federal payments has been approved for repair of highways and other infrastructure. Additional infrastructure projects are pending.

Covered infrastructure repairs include debris removal, protective measures, roads and bridges, public water facilities, public buildings, public utilities, and recreational facilities. The federal government contributes 75 percent of the total funding and the state 25 percent.

Funding to repair state highways accounted for $705,351, or 67 percent of the total federal share. The balance of $349,225 was for other infrastructure repairs in the 26-county area of the state declared eligible for public assistance.

The largest amount of money approved for overall disaster assistance to date was $420,477 for Roane County. The second largest sum was for Kanawha County with $374,251.
