Volunteering
You can help care for public lands, serve the public, gain new skills
and work in the gorgeous Columbia River Gorge as a Forest Service volunteer.
In this time of decreasing budgets and increasing public land use, we
rely more on volunteers to help care for public lands and serve the public.
We need you help!
We are looking for a wide variety of knowledge and skills, including campground hosting, trail maintainence, trail ranger, fishery biology, clerical, photography, interpretation, visitor services and hydrology. From 16-year-old youths to senior citizens, our volunteers are never too young or too old.
If a volunteer is interested in a job, we attempt to place him or her in a part-time position!
Trail Maintenance
Volunteers are given training in the safe use of various handtools, training in proper trail maintenance and construction and a behind-the-scenes look at all the hard work that goes into maintaining the awesome trails in the Gorge. Newcomers are always welcome and there is lots of fun (and sometimes food) to be had!

Summer Youth Program
Teams of 16-19-year-old youths from Portland and the Mid-Columbia area, sponsored by organizations, help maintain trails, campgrounds and recreation facilities. Within eight to ten weeks, they gain skills in teamwork, work in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge and are given environmental education.This program would not be without the help of Mid-Columbia Council of Governments, Urban League of Portland, Mazamas, Commission on Chidren and Families, Hood River County School District and Oregon Department of Human Resources Vocational Rehabilitation. These invaluable partners have volunteered time, donated money and recruited youth to enable this program.
Earn a Northwest Forest Pass by volunteering for two days of trail maintenance.
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Mt. Hood National Forest and Gifford Pinchot National Forest coordinate trail maintainence events for the Trail-Park program.
