Upper Larch Mountain Road to close for winter

Multnomah County Transportation will close the upper section of Larch Mountain Road in the Columbia Gorge by noon on Friday, November 28 for the winter season. Every autumn the county closes upper Larch Mountain Road by installing a snow gate near mile post 10. The closure protects the traveling public from adverse weather conditions and reduces maintenance costs associated with snow removal. The gate is opened each spring. Larch Mountain Road is the highest road in Multnomah County, reaching an altitude of 4055 feet.

Multnomah County maintains Larch Mountain Road and 300 miles of roads and bridges. For more information, visit www.co.multnomah.or.us/roads.

Triple Falls bridge on the Oneonta trail #424 has been removed due to advanced rot. A new bridge is planned and budgeted. Please plan your trip accordingly. Oneonta Creek will not be passable at this point, about 2 miles south of the historic highway.

The Gorge 400 trail from Tanner Creek to John Yeon State Park will be closed from Nov. 18-26 in order to remove a slide.

Winter weather is once again here. Please be prepared for slides, washouts, downed trees and other winter conditions. It gets dark quick out there!

See the trails safety page for more tips.

Triple Falls bridge on the Oneonta trail #424 has been removed due to advanced rot. A new bridge is planned and budgeted. Please plan your trip accordingly. Oneonta Creek will not be passable.

Check portlandhikers.org for updated trail conditions from other hikers.  Trail condition reports to 541-308-1700 and portlandhikers.com are appreciated.

A popular hiking loop is Rucket #405 to Eagle-Benson #434 in the Mark O. Hatfield wilderness and back down Eagle Creek #440.  However, the Eagle-Benson trail #434 is overgrown and has many logs over it making route-finding very difficult.  This trail is not recommended.

The bridge on the Gorge #400 trail behind Wyeth campground is out.  Creek may become impassable in the spring. See map of closure.

Fires are not allowed within 200 feet of trails in the Scenic Area at any time of the year. Gas stoves are allowed.
