Station Goals

  • Apply problem-solving attitude to natural resource issues of federal interest in Michigan and the Great Lakes ecosystem.

  • Work with the public, organizations and other government agencies to protect and restore habitat, investigate and prevent impacts from environmental contaminants, and protect and recover species that are federally listed as threatened and endangered.

Activity Highlights

  • Kirtland’s warbler:  We manage for endangered species recovery and conduct public tours.
    The yearly population census first counted more than 1000 singing males in 2001. In 2006, biologists counted 1,486 singing males.

  • Piping Plovers:  We work toward recovering Region 3’s most endangered species.

  • Karner blue butterfly:  We are supporting State efforts to develop a state-wide Habitat Conservation Plan for this species.

  • Great Lakes Coastal Program:  We work with others to restore and protect coastal resources, enhance fish passage, and control exotic invasive species around the Great Lakes.

  • Natural Resource Damage Assessments:  We restore ecosystems after they have been contaminated.

  • Partners for Fish and Wildlife:  We work with private landowners to restore wetlands on their property.

  • We help the U.S. Forest Service protect endangered species while they manage their forests.

  • We protect endangered species during development of highways and airports.

  • Ludington and Consumer’s Power Settlements:  We protect fish, wildlife, and their habitats while providing for continued energy production.

  • The Great Lakes Fisheries Trust, resulting from the Ludington Pumped Storage Settlement: We are a part of the Trust which provides resources for Lake Michigan fishery and habitat restoration.

  • We monitor the health of birds like bald eagles, Caspian and Forster's terns, and double-crested cormorants.
