    Fishery Biologist (Hydro Licensing) Top
    This is an entry-level position

    The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC or Commission) regulates energy industries, protects the environment and economic interests of the public, and promotes dependable, affordable, and competitive energy markets. This position is for a fishery biologist that would make recommendations to the Commission regarding licensing of non-federal hydropower projects.

    You would visit project sites and represent the Commission in public meetings with agencies and other stakeholders. You would work with a team of environmental, engineering and legal experts to review, analyze, and resolve issues associated with license applications for hydropower projects. As a fishery biologist, you would provide analyses pertaining to fish biology, fish passage, instream flows, water quality, limnology, and aquatic ecology. The Commission relies on the results of such analyses when making determinations on hydropower applications. You would use your knowledge and analytical skills related to fisheries and water quality to ensure that adequate studies are conducted by the hydropower license applicants and use the results of such studies and other information to prepare Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements. You would also participate in technical sessions and settlement conferences with hydroelectric license applicants, state and federal resources agencies, Indian tribes, and non-governmental organizations pertaining to fishery and water quality issues.

    This position would use your knowledge of fisheries, as well as your verbal communication, analytical and writing skills, to help ensure a reliable energy source that is operated and maintained in an environmentally sound manner.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelors or Masters Degree in biological sciences, with fisheries training and strong verbal, analytical and writing skills. Doctorate degree could result in higher starting salary

    Air and Noise Engineer Top
    This is an entry-level position

    As an entry-level staff engineer you would work with an interdisciplinary team of environmental scientists and engineers, to review, analyze, and resolve engineering and environmental issues associated with proposals to construct and operate interstate natural gas projects; including major transmission pipelines, and underground gas storage fields. You would prepare written analyses describing the environmental impacts of the projects with emphasis on engineering-related issues and hazards, and propose recommendations to protect the environment. The engineering-related issues primarily pertain to air and noise emissions and safety. You would visit the project locations before authorization to conduct siting studies and again during construction to assess compliance with the terms and conditions of the FERC authorization. Your position would involve participation in public comment meetings, and technical sessions with project proponents, state and federal resource agencies, and other affected parties. Some travel would be required. Training opportunities are provided and encouraged.

    • A bachelors degree in engineering;

    Environmental Protection Specialist Top
    Office of Energy Projects

    This is an entry-level position

    As an entry-level environmental protection specialist, you would work with an interdisciplinary team of environmental scientists and engineers preparing Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements on proposals to construct and operate interstate natural gas projects, including major transmission pipelines, underground storage fields, and liquefied natural gas terminals. You would review, prepare written analyses describing the potential environmental impacts of proposed projects, and formulate appropriate mitigation with an emphasis on a range of resources including land use, recreation, visuals, soil erosion, wildlife, vegetation, water resources, and socioeconomics. You would travel to project locations to evaluate routes/sites under consideration and again during construction to assess compliance with the terms and conditions of the FERC authorization. Your position would involve participation in public meetings and technical sessions with project proponents, state and federal resource agencies, and other affected parties. Training opportunities are provided and encouraged.

    Qualifications
    • A bachelors degree in the physical, biological, environmental, or social sciences;

    Power Systems Engineer Top
    This is an entry-level position

Do you have experience using power system modeling software and want an opportunity to learn about power systems operation and planning throughout the United States?

    Consider applying what you have learned to the exciting and challenging reliability issues facing the electric bulk-power supply system through a career at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in Washington, D.C. The Commission is currently hiring entry-level electrical engineers with a specialization in power systems to work in its new Division of Reliability.  Engineers in the Division of Reliability are involved in a variety of activities that include developing reliability standards in collaboration with other organizations, developing and analyzing policies for development of the infrastructure necessary for a reliable interconnected power system, and conducting power system analyses.  These aid the Commission in carrying out its regulatory responsibilities.

    Additionally, engineers communicate Commission policies relating to electric reliability, between staff, state and federal agencies, industry groups and foreign governments.

    Greater than 20% travel expected

    Liquified Natural Gas Engineer Top
    Entry-level staff engineers work with a team of engineers to review, analyze, and resolve engineering and safety issues associated with proposals to construct and operate liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminals and storage facilities. They are responsible for the review of engineering design of the proposals, evaluate safety systems, and prepare written analyses for environmental impact statements.

    The engineering-related issues primarily pertain to the operability and reliability of the proposed plant design; the systems to detect and control potential hazards; and the impact on public safety. FERC visits the project locations before authorization to conduct siting studies; inspect active construction sites to assess compliance with the terms and conditions of the FERC authorization; and inspect operating LNG import terminals and storage facilities.

    Positions involve participation in public comment meetings, and technical conferences with project proponents, state and Federal resource agencies, and other affected parties. Frequent travel at times may be required. Training opportunities are provided and encouraged.

    Hydropower Engineer Top
    As an entry-level staff engineer you would work with an interdisciplinary team of environmental scientists and engineers, to review, analyze, and resolve engineering and environmental issues associated with proposals to construct and operate non-federal hydroelectric projects; including major dams, reservoirs and powerplants.

    You would identify and evaluate alternatives to the project proposed and prepare written analyses describing the impacts of the projects and alternatives with emphasis on engineering-related issues including the need for project power, cost/benefit analysis, hydraulic and hydrologic modeling and the interrelationship of project facilities and flows with other environmental resources such as aquatics and recreation. You would propose recommendations to protect and enhance the environment.

    You would visit the project locations before authorization to familiarize yourself with the project site, and if the project is existing, to become familiar with its current and proposed operation.

    Your position would involve participation in public scoping meetings, and technical sessions with project proponents, state and federal resource agencies, and other affected parties. Some travel would be required. Training opportunities are provided and encouraged.
