Friday, June 16, 2000 -- The U.S. Department of Transportations Bureau of
Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released a new report, Bicycle
and Pedestrian Data: Sources, Needs, and Gaps.
This report provides a review of existing sources of bicycle
and pedestrian-related information, including their uses,
quality, and limitations. It also includes information from a
broad range of decision makers, researchers, planners, and other
users identifying and prioritizing areas in which additional or
improved data are needed. By recommending opportunities for
improving the quality and relevancy of bicycle and pedestrian
data, this report will help determine what actions to take to
overcome the deficiencies and limitations of existing data
sources.
"The need for better information on bicycle and
pedestrian transportation is clear and this study will greatly
assist BTS and the transportation community as we work to provide
it," said Dr. Ashish Sen, the Bureaus Director.
The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21)
requires BTS to collect information on bicycle and pedestrian
modes. This supports the DOTs strategic goals of promoting
public health and safety, providing mobility, and improving
environmental quality.
