Monday, January 10, 2000 -- The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) today released a new edition of its popular Pocket Guide to Transportation.

This report provides a snapshot of the U.S. transportation system and highlights major trends since 1970. The Pocket Guide is divided into five sections that cover the extent and use of the transportation system and its impacts on safety, the economy, energy use, and the environment. Much of the information is based on data from the Bureau’s publications, National Transportation Statistics 1999 and Transportation Statistics Annual Report 1999.

"This small publication contains a wealth of information about how the transportation system contributes to our mobility and economy, and affects our safety and the environment," said Dr. Ashish Sen, the Bureau’s Director.

To order free copies of the Pocket Guide to Transportation, call 202-366-DATA, fax 202-366-3640, or write to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, U.S. Department of Transportation, Room 3430, 400 Seventh Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20590. The electronic version of the report is available on the BTS Internet site at www.bts.gov
