  • Lassen National Forest and Collins Pine Company Announce Seasonal Road Restriction

    Chester, CA…The Lassen National Forest in cooperation with Collins Pine Company and other private landowners has instituted a seasonal restriction on Forest Road 28N88, also known as Collins Road 1500. This road is cooperatively managed and is located southwest of Gurnsey Creek between Deer Creek Meadow and Childs Meadow. This restriction will also limit access to a road known as Forest Road 29N25.
  • Public Snowshoe Walks Begin January 2008

A little stretching to work out the holiday kinks will help get you ready for outdoor winter fun. Join the Almanor Ranger District this winter to observe the beautiful mountain landscapes, learn about “Winter Survival�, “Trees and Wintering Animals of the Lassen National Forest�, and winter safety while walking on snowshoes.
  • Lassen National Forest Snowmobile Route Restrictions Begin December 26th

    Lassen National Forest snowmobile routes are closed to all wheeled vehicles including All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) until March 31, 2008. Lassen National Forest has six major designated snowmobile areas with 477 miles of groomed trails on the Forest. According to Michael Zunino Patrol Captain for the Lassen, “We are concerned about resource protection and visitor safety.� “Wheeled vehicles create ruts on groomed trails which result in hazardous conditions for snowmobilers; however, wheeled vehicles are permitted elsewhere on the Forest.
  • Zunino Honored as Veterans Law Enforcement Officer of the Year

    Susanville, Ca…The Lassen County Veterans awarded Lassen National Forest’s Mike Zunino with the Agency Law Enforcement Officer of the year award on November 14th. Zunino, the Lassen and Modoc National Forests Patrol Captain, was honored for his outstanding efforts in law enforcement. “During his career, Mike has worked in fire and recreation and served many of those years as a co-lateral Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Christmas Tree Permit UPDATE!

    Christmas Tree Permits are now available to purchase and will be sold through December 15. Each permit allows the harvesting of one Christmas tree from Lassen National Forest lands. Permits will sell for $10.00 each and the maximum allowed per household is two permits. Along with the Christmas Tree Permit tag, purchasers are provided a map showing cutting areas, requirements and restrictions, and helpful tips.
  • New Supervisor Selected to Head Lassen National Forest

    A 20-year Forest Service veteran with strong ties to National Forests in the Sierra Nevada has been tapped to oversee the 1.1 million-acre Lassen National Forest in Susanville, Calif. Kathleen Morse, Forest Supervisor on the Allegheny National Forest in Northeastern, Penn., since 2005, returns to the Sierra Nevada where she led a regional effort to revise land management plans on 11 national forests. Newly revised plans can more easily respond to public concerns for wildfire and fuels.
  • Temporary burn ban lifted Oct. 29

    The temporary residential burn ban has been lifted by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL-FIRE), effective October 29. If residents obtain their burn permit from the Plumas National Forest, this applies. The burn ban was imposed due to fire weather conditions last week and the drawdown of firefighting resources assigned to southern California fires.
  • Important Information About the High Lakes OHV Area

    On June 5th a Decision Memo was signed issuing the Temporary Forest Order prohibiting cross-country motorized wheeled vehicle travel on the Lassen National Forest. Under the Temporary Forest Order, motorized wheeled vehicle travel on most existing roads, trails, and small riding areas is allowed to continue. Cross-country travel (between roads, trails or areas) in the Forest is prohibited. In other words, you need to stay on the roads, trails, or areas displayed on the Forest Order maps and not drive off them unless you have a permit that specifically allows you to do so. Parking is allowed within one vehicle length of a mapped route.
  • Lassen National Forest Christmas Tree Permit Sales Begin

  • Lassen National Forest to Present Proposed Action for Route Designation

    The Lassen National Forest will be holding workshops regarding a Notice of Intent (NOI) to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for designating wheeled motorized vehicle travel.
  • Front Country Driving Tour October 26

    The Lassen National Forest will be conducting an interpretive driving tour of the Almanor Ranger Districts scenic front country on Friday, October 26. Participants will be able to view fall colors and visit locations such as: historic McCarthy Point lookout, and Bruff’s camp a major stop along the historic Lassen Emigrant trail; a lunch break will be at the Black Rock campground followed by a short walk to the popular Mill Creek trailhead to access the Ishi Wilderness, California’s only low elevation Wilderness.
  • New Leadership at Eagle Lake Ranger District

    Terri Frolli has been selected as the new Eagle Lake District Ranger on the Lassen National Forest. “This is a great opportunity to be part of a very diverse and multi-faceted district which has a variety of vegetative management opportunities, biomass and wind for energy, forage for livestock, and includes year-around recreation for locals and visitors alike� commented Frolli. “I am looking forward to aggressively restoring and maintaining healthy and sustainable ecosystems, improving operational efficiencies, and continuing partnerships working with the employees of the Eagle Lake District, the local communities, Tribes, and the people that visit.�
  • Cal Fire announces End of Fire Season for 2007 in Lassen County, Modoc County and in the Almanor Basin.

    Effective Monday, October 15, 2007 at 8:00 a.m., the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) Lassen-Modoc Unit will end fire season for the year 2007. This area includes the counties of Lassen, Modoc and the Almanor Basin area of Plumas County.
  • Fall Prescribed Burning Begins on Public Lands

    The Bureau of Land Management, Lassen Volcanic National Park and the Lassen National Forest are preparing to implement their fall prescribed burning programs. “Burning has begun as weather conditions are conducive to ensure safe and efficient burning conditions,� commented Jim Hedges, co-center manager for the Susanville Interagency Fire Center (SIFC).
  • Burn Ban Rescinded

    Susanville-Effective Monday, October 8th, 2007 at 8:00 a.m., the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) Lassen-Modoc Unit has rescinded the burn ban in State Responsibility Areas of Lassen, Modoc and Plumas Counties. Burn permits are required until the end of the declared fire season and may be obtained at any local CAL FIRE station.
  • Lassen National Forest Lifts Road Closures (Clarification)

    The Lassen National Forest has opened roads that lead to the top of Diamond Mountain east of Susanville. The temporary closures were implemented to protect public safety during the Moonlight Fire. While these roads are open, access into the Moonlight fire area is still closed due to safety concerns of fire burned trees that have been and will continue to fall into roadways. Officials caution people to drive carefully as firefighting personnel and equipment are continuing to work.
  • Lassen National Forest Lifts Fire Restrictions

    The Lassen National Forest will lift fire restrictions Saturday, September 29, 2007, in northeastern California. Lifting of restrictions means that campfires can again be used outside of developed campgrounds and recreation sites (camp fire permits are required), and that chainsaws can again be used all day on National Forest lands.
  • Fire Restrictions to be Lifted on BLM Lands

    With the onset of cooler autumn weather, fire restrictions will be lifted Saturday, Sept. 29, on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Managements northeast California field offices and the Modoc National Forest.
  • Antelope Lake Recreation Area Open

    Paved roads from Janesville and Genesee Valley entering the Antelope Lake Recreation Area have re-opened. The temporary road closures were implemented for public safety during the Moonlight Fire. Forest closures of the Antelope Fire Complex and Moonlight Fire areas including most dirt roads remain in effect for safety until further notice. Visitors need to be cautious and alert for firefighting personnel and equipment in the area. The campgrounds are closed for the season. For more information contact the Mt.   • Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway Public Meetings Announced

    The Volcanic Legacy Community Partnership announces a series of public meetings to gather community input for the preparation of an Interpretive Plan (Plan) for the Lassen and Modoc segments of the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway – All American Road. The meetings are designed to obtain information on what interpretive sites and visitor services community members would like to see incorporated in the Plan for their geographic area. Meetings will be held in the following locations. All meetings will start at 6:30 PM.
  • Lassen National Forest Lifts Road Closures in Moonlight Fire Area

    The Lassen National Forest has opened roads that lead to the top of Diamond Mountain east of Susanville. These temporary closures were implemented to protect public safety during the Moonlight Fire. Now that the roads are open to all, officials caution people to drive carefully on these roads throughout the area as firefighting personnel and equipment are continuing to work along these roads. Drivers are also cautioned to be vigilant for trees that have been weakened by the fire and may fall across the roads.
  • Scales Road Closure

    Forest Service Road 20N35, known locally as the Scales Road, will be closed for the next several months for repair, opening the end of November, weather permitting. Motorists may access the Scales area via County Road 2 (Yuba) through "Buckeye" and "Stowman" during the closure period.
  • Lassen National Forest Hosts OHV Grants Meeting

    Susanville, CA… The Lassen National Forest is hosting a public meeting on Monday, August 20, at 6 p.m. at the Forest headquarters, 2550 Riverside Drive, in Susanville, to discuss the Forest’s off-highway vehicle (OHV) grants for submission to the California State Off-highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division and OHV Commission.
  • Colby Fire 100% Contained

    Fire crews have achieved 100 percent containment of a 168-acre forest fire burning near State Highway 32 in the Deer Creek Canyon northeast of Chico. The cause remains under investigation.
  • Fire Crews Battling Forest Fire along Highway 32, Tehama County

    Fire Crews from the Susanville Interagency Fire Center are fighting a 300-acre forest fire along State Highway 32 northeast of Chico. The Colby Fire, named for nearby Colby Mountain, is burning about 22 miles south of the junction with state highways 36 and 32. It is about 40 miles northeast of Chico.
  • Lassen National Forest Announces Changes in Fire Restrictions

    Susanville, Calif…The Lassen National Forest has announced changes in the fire restrictions now in effect forest wide. Forest Supervisor Laurie Tippin announced that campfires and charcoal barbecues will be prohibited at the Butte Creek, Willow Springs and West Branch campgrounds, and at Stover Camp. “As we progress through the fire season we continually evaluate conditions and fire dangers,� Tippin said. “We have determined that conditions at the above camping areas have changed and fire restrictions are appropriate. We continue to stress the importance of being extremely careful with fire.�
  • Lassen National Forest to Suspend Wood Cutting July 14

    Susanville, CA….The Lassen National Forest is suspending all woodcutting activity beginning Saturday, July 14. The last day for chainsaw use on the Lassen NF will be Friday, July 13. On BLM lands, wood cutting will be allowed until 1:00 p.m.
  • Agencies Gear Up for Fire Season

    As the Memorial Day holiday and fire season approaches, the Lassen, Modoc and Plumas National Forests as well as Bureau of Land Management, CAL Fire and Lassen Volcanic National Park are in the process of staffing up to seasonal levels. Starting May 14 and over the next couple of weeks, the agencies are opening fire stations that have been closed for the winter, fully staffing engines, crews, lookouts and fire personnel are completing their annual required fire training.
  • Lassen National Forest Prepares Campgrounds for Memorial Day

    With Memorial Day weekend around the corner, many people are planning to spend their holiday camping. The Lassen National Forest has been preparing campgrounds across the forest to be open by the weekend. Most of the Almanor Ranger District’s campgrounds will be open and accessible with exception to Silver Bowl and Rocky Knoll in the Silver Lake area. These two campgrounds may open later in the summer as cleanup and maintenance work is still on-going from thinning that occurred in the fall of 2006. On the Eagle Lake Ranger District, campgrounds will be open by May 17th. Hat Creek Ranger District campgrounds are open now and the Old Station Visitor Center located at the junction of Highway 44 and Highway 89 is staffed for weekend visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The center will begin a summer schedule in mid-June and will be open seven days a week. The friendly staff is ready to provide the public with sightseeing, fishing and camping information.
  • Lassen National Forest Celebrates Wildflower Week

    The Lassen National Forest invites the public to participate in ongoing events celebrating wildflowers the week of May 21 through May 25. In honor of this special week, the Forest Service is promoting the importance of native plant conservation with an emphasis on the beauty and value of wildflowers. Celebrating Wildflowers also highlights how the nation’s Forests, and millions of acres of public lands are America’s wildflower gardens.

  • Almanor Ranger District Seeks Feedback on Project

    The Lassen National Forest, Almanor Ranger District proposes to implement Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fuels reduction and wildlife habitat improvement treatments in the Panther Springs and Hogsback Ridge area of the Almanor Ranger District. A total of 3705 acres are proposed for treatment by utilization of prescribed fire, non-commercial mechanical thinning and hand thinning and piling treatments. The general location of the project is seven miles southeast of the Paynes Creek along Ponderosa Way (Forest Road 28N29) and Hogsback Road (Forest Road 28N24). The legal description of the project area is Sections 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28 and 33, Township 28 N, Range 1 E; Section 8, Township 28 N, Range 2 E; Sections 28, 29, 30 and 32, Township 28 N, Range 2 E and Section 5, Township 27 N, Range 2 E, Mount Diablo Meridian.
  • Fall Hours at Old Station Visitor Information Center

    Old Station Visitor Information Center will be adjusting their operating schedule and will only open during weekends. The center will be open on Saturdays and Sundays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. through September 30, 2006. During the months of October through December 10, the weekend hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Forest Service Proposes Forest Health Restoration Project in Butte County

    Chester, CA…The Almanor Ranger District is proposing a comprehensive forest health restoration project on the Lassen National Forest in Butte County. The project, named the Willow Forest Health Restoration Project, is one of several that are planned in the Lassen National Forest as mandated by the Herger-Feinstein Quincy Library Group Act of 1998 that authorizes test pilot projects designed to improve forest health conditions, fire management, wildlife habitat, watershed, and local economies. The Willow Forest Health Restoration Project features a variety of vegetation management proposals inside of 42,340 acres of National Forest System land.....
