VA Awards Grant to North Carolina Veterans Home

August 3, 2005

WASHINGTON – Making sure the North Carolina Veterans Home remains a comfortable residence for veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is targeting over $331,000 in grant money for improvements to the Fayetteville facility.

"This grant reflects the federal-state partnership that is honoring our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson.  "This partnership provides a comfortable home for veterans in a time of personal need."

The grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to construct a storage building, gazebo and replace the roof at Fayetteville.  The overall cost of the project is approximately $510,431.

VA’s State Home Program is a partnership with the states to acquire, construct or renovate nursing homes, domiciliaries and adult day health care facilities for veterans.  When construction is complete and inspections are satisfactory, the facilities qualify for per diem payments from VA; however, the states own and operate the homes

North Carolina also operates a veterans home in Salisbury.  The homes are available to veterans who have lived in North Carolina for 24 consecutive months prior to application and have been discharged under honorable conditions.  Additionally, the veteran must be referred by a licensed physician and be in need of skilled or intermediate nursing care.

In fiscal year 2004, VA spent over $2 billion in North Carolina to serve over 767,000 veterans who live in the state.

In North Carolina, VA operates medical centers in Ashville, Durham, Fayetteville and Salisbury with outpatient clinics and Vet Centers in many locations.

Information about North Carolina state veterans nursing homes is available on the Web at http://www.doa.state.nc.us/vets/va.htm or by calling (910) 630-4257.
